Names & Nomenclature — Hawthorn Berry, sold as Hawthorn Berry and declared on the label as Hawthorn Berry (Crataegus monogyna), is botanically Crataegus monogyna Jacq. of the family Rosaceae (the rose family); its fruit is known pharmacopeially as Crataegi fructus; this is the European hawthorn, distinct from the Traditional Chinese Medicine Shan Zha (山楂, shān zhā, Crataegus pinnatifida), and it has no classical Ayurvedic name; in German it is Eingriffliger Weißdorn, in Spanish espino albar, majuelo, or espino blanco, and in French aubépine monogyne; and its common English names include common hawthorn, oneseed hawthorn, may, and whitethorn.
