Dyer's Woad (Isatis tinctoria) - Root
Dyer's Woad — Root (Isatis tinctoria) — organic, small-batch dried root, cut and sifted.
AKA: Isatis Root, Woad Root, European Ban Lan Gen.
Woad is a plant with two lives. European dyers grew it for centuries as the source of a deep, durable blue, coloring cloth long before indigo reached the continent. Herbalists across Asia knew the same plant differently — for them the value sat underground. The root is bitter, cooling, and dense, and it is prepared as a decoction rather than a light steep. It gives a darker, earthier cup than the leaf, with none of the leaf's grassy edge.
Traditionally used to support:
- Traditionally used as a cooling, bitter root in East Asian practice
- Traditionally valued during warm, feverish seasons
- Traditionally simmered as a decoction rather than steeped
- Long associated in folk custom with the throat
Ethically sourced and hand-packed by AMA Remedies in small batches.
Ingredients: Organic Dyer's Woad root (Isatis tinctoria).
Leaf or root? The leaf is lighter and grassier, and steeps like a tea. The root is denser and more bitter, and rewards a longer simmer. They are the same plant, used differently. See our Dyer's Woad — Leaf.
