Names & Nomenclature — Dan Shen, sold as Dan Shen (Red Sage) and declared on the label as Dan Shen / Red Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza), is botanically Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge of the family Lamiaceae (the mint family); its root is known pharmacopeially as Salviae miltiorrhizae radix; in Traditional Chinese Medicine it is 丹参 (dān shēn), and it has no classical Ayurvedic name; in German it is Rotwurzel-Salbei or Chinesischer Salbei, in Spanish salvia roja china or dan shen, and in French sauge rouge or salvia de Chine; and its common English names include red sage, Chinese sage, tan shen, and dan shen.
