Names & Nomenclature — Acacia, sold as Acacia and declared on the label as Acacia (Acacia senegal), is botanically Senegalia senegal (L.) Britton, with the long-used synonym Acacia senegal (L.) Willd., of the family Fabaceae (the legume family); its dried gum is known pharmacopeially as Acaciae gummi or gummi arabicum (gum arabic); it has no classical Traditional Chinese Medicine or Ayurvedic name for this species; in German it is Verek-Akazie or Gummiarabikumbaum, in Spanish acacia del Senegal or goma arábiga, and in French gommier blanc or acacia à gomme; and its common English names include gum arabic tree, gum acacia, and hashab.
