Names & Nomenclature — Usnea, sold as Usnea and declared on the label as Usnea (Usnea barbata), is a lichen (a fungus-alga symbiosis), botanically Usnea barbata (L.) F.H.Wigg. of the family Parmeliaceae; its thallus is known pharmacopeially as Usneae lichen; in Traditional Chinese Medicine it is 松萝 (sōng luó), and it has no classical Ayurvedic name; in German it is Bartflechte or Baumbart, in Spanish usnea, barba de viejo, or musgo de árbol, and in French usnée or barbe de vieillard; and its common English names include usnea, old man's beard, beard lichen, and tree moss.
