Names & Nomenclature — Sheep Sorrel, sold as Sheep Sorrel and declared on the label as Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella), is botanically Rumex acetosella L. of the family Polygonaceae (the knotweed family) — a traditional component of the Essiac blend; its herb is known pharmacopeially as Rumicis acetosellae herba; the related Rumex species are the Traditional Chinese Medicine 酸模 (suān mó), this species having no distinct classical Chinese or Ayurvedic name; in German it is Kleiner Sauerampfer, in Spanish acedera menor or vinagrera, and in French petite oseille or oseille des brebis; and its common English names include sheep sorrel, red sorrel, field sorrel, and sour weed.
