Names & Nomenclature — Senega Root, sold as Senega Root and declared on the label as Senega Root (Polygala senega), is botanically Polygala senega L. of the family Polygalaceae (the milkwort family); its root is known pharmacopeially as Senegae radix; the related Polygala tenuifolia is the Traditional Chinese Medicine Yuan Zhi (远志), this North American species having no distinct classical Chinese or Ayurvedic name; in German it is Senega-Wurzel or Klapperschlangenwurzel, in Spanish raíz de senega or polígala de Virginia, and in French polygala de Virginie or racine de sénéga; and its common English names include senega root, seneca snakeroot, senega snakeroot, and milkwort.
